At our cabin in the freezing wind and…..snow?

We got up early and Sebastian packed his gear.  Then he hurried to the kitchen to help make breakfast, so we could get to the cabin and hike.  I taught him how to make his favorite soft scrambled eggs with LOTS of cheddar cheese. Yum!

Then he loaded the Rat with Grandpa’s help.

We left sunny, warm Mesa…. and we were off to our mountain cabin—where Sebastian unloaded the car of all our supplies.  It was freezing with wind gusts up to 25 mph.  Grandpa said to unload a few loads, and then he and Sebastian could sit in our  snug cabin to warm up.  But no, Sebastian said, “we always unpack and then relax.”

Grandpa took a break inside the cabin and stayed warm.   When he went to finish unloading, Sebastion had already unloaded the ENTIRE car!

We’re going to keep Sebastian around.  He’s a real worker bee (and he’s so agreeable, and fun too).

Up to the loft Sebastian headed.  As all good Scouts know, “”you always set up your camp first thing.”

Just when we we headed out the door to show Sebastian my Valentine lot, guess what?  It started to snow!

For real….

So Grandpa and I stayed inside the warm cabin.  But not Sebastian—out he ran to taste and feel the snow.

But not for long!

I was going crazy. I was so eager and excited to see my Valentine lot, and to see how much progress our handyman, Brian, had made on cleaning up all the garbage on our new property.  So finally, Grandpa and Sebastian donned their warmest winter clothes (well actually, Sebastian wore my extra heavy down coat), and left the cozy, warm cabin.  Thank you Grandpa and Sebastian.

The lot isn’t totally cleaned up, but Brian has literally taken a ton of junk to the dump, and it looks beautiful!

Sebastian enjoyed seeing the “back forty” at our cabin….and shooting off his “real” cap gun.

Grandpa showed Sebastian the 1948 short film, “Goodbye Miss Turlock.”  Grandpa remembered seeing this film at the theater when he was a little boy.  It’s a film about the one-room schoolhouse that was becoming obsolete way back in 1948, the year Grandpa was born.  The reason that he wanted to show it to Sebastian was because Sebastian’s great grandmother Graybill had taught in a one room schoolhouse for two years in 1949 when she was only 17 years old.  She had arrive hours before the children,so she could carry buckets of coal, and heat up the schoolhouse.

Our loveseat is so tiny that Sebastian sat on my lap to watch this wonderfully sweet short film.  It was also incredibly sweet have Sebastian cuddled with us in my lap….perhaps for the last time, as he will soon be a teenager.

While I cooked our dinner, Sebastian entertained us by playing numerous music scores of his own creation.

Nothing is more cozy than the loft of our cabin when it’s freezing outside.  So after dinner, we ate our dessert of homemade chocolate chip cookies in the loft as we watched Sebastian’s favorite western movie, “The Scalphunters.”

Tomorrow is supposed to be 40 degrees and sunny, so we’re planning on bundling up and going on a hike in the mountains.
