Carmel to Santa Barbara

We keep heading south, looking for warmth. I think we've finally found it. Yeah!!!!!

We left Vicky's parents' home about 9:30, and drove down Highway 101 to Santa Barbara. It was the easiest drive yet--made the best time of any day. I had located what appeared to be an upscale RV campground that was right next to hiking trails. Thought it would be fun to spend the next day hiking, since we hadn't been able to do this yet.

The drive was uneventful. Most of it was through rolling hills that weren't all that attractive. The high point was driving through Buellton CA, which we learned is the nation's "Split pea soup capital of the country."

When we got closer to Santa Barbara it got more interesting, though--at one time we were driving through hills and then all of a sudden we were along the ocean. That was fun:

Our "campground" tonight is actually more of a resort than a campground. Heated pool and jacuzzi. The rates are high, but sort of weird, so that creates a dilemma. The first night is $70 (ack!) but the second night is half that, and the third night is free. So, if we stay one night it's $70, two night's it is about $50 per night, and three nights it's about $35 per night. So, do we stay here longer just because it's cheaper?

There is enough to do here for three days (hiking and biking), for sure, but the weather forecast for the third day is miserable. If we stay three days, on the third (free) day, we'll probably do nothing more than sit in our camper and talk about how much money we are saving.

So we probably should use that day to travel, which at this point is to Joshua Tree National Forrest. But, jeez, that free day. Waste it?
