An absolutely perfect 1st day of 2023

As dawn was breaking on January 1, 2023, the rain started just as we finished our 50K bike ride.  For two and a half hours we flew around the roads and trails on our bicycles in the dark.  We felt like children sneaking out of the house before anyone else at home or in the neighborhood was up.

Then it rained all day long….it was like so many days that we had spent together, snug in our home in the Pacific Northwest on Whidbey Island.  And just like those days long ago, we didn’t care if it rained.  We had already played together outside in the early morning for several hours.  And now we had the whole day stretching ahead of us—just the two of us together.

We were back home from cycling as the rain started and the wind picked up.  Time for a well earned breakfast in bed…

We met and fell in love at a dance, so of course, we danced on the first day of the new year!

We had planned to have fondue, but I remembered in the middle of the night that we had left our fondue pot at our cabin—80 miles away.  Dan said he would barbecue the steak, chicken, and pork chops, but since it was still miserably wet outside, I decided to cook our New Year’s Day dinner inside instead.

And  I made something extra special—Mom’s super baked sour cream mashed potatoes with bacon and cheese!

Yesterday we had packed up all our Christmas decorations and Snow Villages.  It was sad and a loss to say goodbye to all these “friends”  and old memories.  We won’t see them for another year.  So I picked two huge baskets of oranges and decorated our home with bundles of bright oranges.

I baked chocolate chip cookies for our New Year’s dessert…..see some of the oranges from our trees.

By the way, we ate the cookies….and left the oranges for tomorrow when there are no decadent cookies to munch on.

We reminisced about 2022.  We have so many good memories of a most wonderful year.

Then we toasted the New Year, each other, our children, grandchildren, and all our family….

Welcome 2023…..we have great plans for this new year!
