It seems that there are over a thousand lakes in Arizona, but only FIVE natural lakes. Potato Lake is not one of these. The natural lakes are Mormon Lake, Stoneman Lake, Ashurst Lake, Kinnikinick Lake, and Upper Mary Lake. They are all located in the Coconino National Forest, just a little north of Potato Lake.
We rode Roadrunner and Wily E on a beautiful mountain dirt road on the Mogollon Rim to Potato Lake.
The forest service has done a good of protecting this little lake from all vehicles. We left our bikes and walked the rest of the way to the lake.
It is accessible by foot for all who want to enjoy this little gem that is nestled under tall pines. It’s a good place for a picnic. Also, rumor has it that there are tasty crawdads living in this lake.
Just as the lake came into our view we spotted a coyote on the far side of lake. It didn’t seem to notice us. It was a beautiful sight to see this wild animal running freely, lite up by the morning sunlight.
But the question remains…..why is it called Potato Lake? All we could come up with was because it is shaped like a potato and is the same color as a potato.
That’s good enough for us. In honor of beautiful little Potato Lake, we going to have potatoes for dinner tonight!
