Prairie dogs in the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge

On our hike today we frequently heard a yip yip from some animal.  We discovered that we were walking through a Prairie Dog town, just like the ones we watched as children in one of the old Walt Disney nature shows,

These animals were almost there extinct, but now because of protected areas have come back.

They look out of thir burrows and make that yip yip sound to warn others.  That is why they live in communities--they have many other Prairie Dogs around to act as sentinels.

There are acres and acres of them here.  Can you spot them in this photo?  There are several standing by their holes yipping away.
