Today was totally fun. We did a 5-mile hike, with probably about 1200 foot elevation gain on the Bill Wallace Trail. It was through terrain that differed from anything Vicky or I had ever experienced. Because of the time of the year, the vegetation was mostly dead, although there were a few flowers here and there. It was over rolling hills, with beautiful views of the coast and of the Santa Ynez mountains. We had a map, although it wasn't too helpful, so we just went where we wanted to go.
The weather was warm--often just right for short shirt sleeves. It was the longest walk/hike yet on my newly repaired foot, and it did well.
We got back to the camper about 1:00, rested for about 10 minutes, and then decided we needed a bike ride, so off we went.
We decided to take a frontage road to Refugio Beach, and tooled around there for awhile. After running into a park ranger, he directed us to a bike trail to another beach, the El Capitan Beach. It was a really cool trail, along the ocean. We didn't get to El Capitan Beach, though, because the trail was closed after about 3 miles because of a mud slide. But it was a nice ride nevertheless, and just enough considering we had done a 5 mile hike earlier that day:
Along this ride is where we saw the sign that said that California has a law that you are to keep your groin in sand and water. We didn't know that, but we will do our best from now on.
We returned to our resort/campground, and headed to the jacuzzi. Very luxurious. Felt good on sore muscles.
Tomorrow's forecast is for rain, so we'll use it as a travel day and drive to Joshua Tree National Forest.
Ha-ha! A groin is like a jetty. They're warning you that there are not plainly visible remains of a groin in the sand and in the water that you could get hurt on, only I guess that they weren't...
