I never really thought about it before, but I’ve never had a new stove, refrigerator, or dishwasher. And Dan’s not sure if he has ever bought a new kitchen appliance either. That’s what happens when you don’t build a new home, and when if something breaks you call the repair guy instead of purchasing another appliance.
Sean, Emily, Soren, and Sebastian arrived the day after Christmas, and our refrigerator decided that this would be a good time to get temperamental. The door never stayed shut very well and the ice maker didn’t work. Just when we had it packed to the brim with food for our week together, the ice maker kicked into gear, well sort of. The water started running, and since it didn’t make ice, the refrigerator and kitchen floor flooded.
Dan turned off the water to the ice maker. Problem solved, or so we thought. The next trick the refrigerator played on us was to freeze everything in the refrigerator compartment. So we turned the thermostat down to a smidgen above “OFF.”
That worked, until it didn’t. It got too warm. So we had to monitor the temperature every half hour—it would get colder, warmer, colder…..
That’s what we have been doing the past two weeks. Note the TWO thermostats on the door of the refrigerator.
By the way, did you know that when eggs freeze, the shells crack? And when they thaw out, luckily they taste just fine?
We didn’t even bother with calling the repair guy. The refrigerator is as old as Nuestra Casa, over 40 years old. So we just bought a new one.
Ok, so I like my feta cheese. I stocked up because there have been months during the pandemic when it wasn’t available. Dan is still laughing at the enormous amount of feta cheese I have hoarded. He stopped laughing, when I reminded him of all the Chianti I have stockpiled for him.
Don’t tell our old refrigerator, but we actually like our new one better.
Isn’t it pretty—and it works too!
