We will always remember our first day of school, and we definitely remember our children’s first day of school.
Every summer our children selected their “first day of school outfit." They knew that we would line them up and take their picture as they excitedly headed off in the fall for another year of school and to reunite with all their friends.
As a parent, it was always good to see them excitedly heading off to school, but it was also kind of sad. They were a year older and our little children were growing up. Both Dan and I loved being parents. We enjoyed every single stage that our children went through....from baby to toddler, from a young child to the years just before they became a teenager. And even the teenage years were a blast!
It was joyous to watch these little infants develop a definite personality. We cherished each of our children and celebrated their individuality.
The years passed and then suddenly our children were adults. How did that happen? It seemed that just a few years ago they were babies and than without us hardly noticing, they thought they were old enough to take on the world....without us.
As grandparents, we are repeating this same cycle of life as we see our grandchildren in their “first day of school outfits” off on their first day of school. Their first day of school this year is in the midst of a pandemic. Despite that, they are still excited!
They are all adorable, but they are growing up just a little too fast for us.
