Hike around Scott Lake, Scott Lake State Park, Kansas

Vicky guessed it would be 3 miles around the lake. I guessed 4 1/4. We were dead on (if you add our estimates): It was 7 miles. Aren't we ever the experienced hikers?

It's not like hiking the Cascades, or Joshua Tree National Park, or the Cibola National Forest, but unless you are a silly purist, it is a very nice little hike. Some of it was actually quite beautiful, and, to be fair, some of it hugged the road too much and wasn't. But if you come here to boat or fish, consider putting on your sneakers and giving it a try. If you only want to do a couple of miles of the hike, we recommend starting at the north end of the lake, at the "horse unloading and camp area," and hiking toward the lake (not toward the dam) from there. It is the best part of the hike.

Along the way we saw deer and turkeys. There was only 650 feet of elevation gain for the 7 miles, so it wasn't a monster hike by any means. Just a fun day in nature.

On the hike we spotted this sign outside a church campground. Vicky said it was probably the only church in Kansas that advertised smoking dope.
