Last week we came down to the Valley to Nuestra Casa, our winter home in Leisure World, a week ago for three days filled with five doctor appointments.
Then I had a call late last week that there was a cancellation, so I could get my MRI on Friday morning. Great, since we already had appointments with our primary care doctor for later in the morning on Friday. We could be back at our mountain cabin Friday afternoon!
Well, as you know, the best laid plans often go astray. My MRI wa cancelled early Friday morning. The technician, who was already subbing for the regular technician, called in “sick,” or perhaps wanted a long, three day weekend. OK, so we’re a little cynical, but we were also employed once upon a time…..a long, long time ago.
Meanwhile, Danny got a call….our heart doctor had a cancellation, so we were able to move his ablation appointment up a month to Tuesday. This was great. And well worth staying in our beautiful home in the “hot” Valley for another week.
I was able to schedule my MRI for the day after Danny’s appointment. Our three day trip to the “Valley” now became an eleven day trip. Of course, we had stupidly brought only a week worth of Danny’s heart medicine. So last Saturday, we enjoyed a beautiful 80 mile drive up to our cabin in Pine….and then 80 miles back down to the Valley.
Then yesterday, both Danny and I were told that the ablation and my MRI were cancelled as our insurance hadn’t approved our procedures yet. Darn!!!**!
We spent several more hours on the phone with insurance agents and doctor’s offices listening to their abrasive “music” while being on “hold” incessantly. All to no avail. Both our procedures were cancelled.
And then this morning, Tuesday, we received a phone call from our health insurance. They had approved Danny’s ablation in less than 24 hours! So another hour of phone calls, only to find out that the doctor’s office (who had waited until the last minute to send to our insurance company the request for approval) had gone ahead and notified the hospital and staff that we wouldn’t be there for the ablation. The doctor already had scheduled another patient.
Meanwhile, the imaging center had ANOTHER cancellation, so we scheduled my MRI for Friday—we’ll see….
In the past week we have been scheduled for five doctor appointments and four medical procedures. Three of the medical procedures have been cancelled. We have spent more than five hours on the phone with medical personnel. This is our life now….we would say that doctors and hospitals are our latest hobby, but hobbies are supposed to be fun.
The sweet part of our time down in the Valley is that we have taken several beautiful early morning walks and bike rides in our serene, quiet little bit of paradise in the middle of Mesa Arizona…..Leisure World.
And best of all….we spent Sunday morning in our home holding each other tightly, gazing into each other’s eyes lovingly, and dancing together.
Our granddaughter, Marina, sent us a recording of her rendition of “Just the Way You Are.” So of course, we danced to her lovely voice coming to us from Japan!
It was so wonderful dancing in our home here (where we have an activity room with a dance floor that we installed), that we just may dance together again, before my (if not cancelled again) MRI appointment.
At our cabin we dance on the front deck….not exactly the best dance floor for us to dance our best, but we have an awful lot of fun no matter where we are or what we so, as long as we’re together!
